Herculez Gomez explains why he believes the U.S. should continue searching for high-profile managers if Jürgen Klopp declines the offer.
United States Soccer has begun its search for a new manager following the dismissal of Gregg Berhalter. Sources tell ESPN that the organization has reached out to former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, though it seems unlikely the German coach will pursue the opportunity further.
Klopp, 57, has consistently stated his intention to take a 12-month break from management after nearly nine years with Liverpool. Additionally, a source mentioned to ESPN that Klopp might not return to management at all, and his substantial financial demands, which would be over eight figures, are also a consideration.
The search for a new manager comes after the U.S. national team’s disappointing performance in the 2024 Copa América, where they failed to progress beyond the group stage. As a result, Berhalter was officially relieved of his duties on Wednesday.
U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker announced during a call with reporters that the search for a new manager would begin immediately, with hopes to have someone in place by the September international window.
“I want to get the best coach possible to help the team win,” Crocker said. “Whether they’re from the U.S. or elsewhere, they need to fit the profile of a serial winning coach who can develop this group of players.”
While Crocker aims to expedite the process, he is prepared to use an interim coach if necessary.
