A recently circulating photograph has caused significant confusion amidst rising tensions between India and Pakistan, falsely claiming to depict a captured Pakistan Air Force pilot. This photo, however, originates from a 2016 incident involving a Turkish F-16 fighter jet crash and is unrelated to the current military conflict.
The incident has heightened concerns as military actions escalated on Thursday night, marking a potentially dangerous turn in relations between the two nations. The blurry photo going viral features a group of uniformed personnel in an open area, misleadingly captioned to suggest it illustrates a Pakistani pilot’s capture during the ongoing conflict.
Fact-checking efforts revealed that the image was first reported by the news agency Getty Images on December 12, 2016, capturing the aftermath of a Turkish fighter jet’s crash in Diyarbakir, Türkiye. The original report indicated that the pilot had ejected safely, and there is no evidence of any individual being captured, contradicting viral claims.
Furthermore, the Indian Air Force has not confirmed any reports of a captured pilot in the Pathankot area of Punjab or Rajasthan, with officials stating that operations are actively progressing in the regions.
