As the Turkey Trot event wraps up in South Florida, the Thanksgiving celebrations in the area are off to an active start. The sound of the starting gun echoed through Tropical Park shortly after 7 AM, marking the beginning of the Thanksgiving race.
Alejandro Ocaña from Spain was among the first at the starting line and clinched victory in the 10-kilometer race. “It was truly impressive. I’ve participated in previous years, and this race was very fast. In past years we finished in 32 minutes, but this time we completed it in under 31. It was a challenging 10K, and while the heat was manageable, the humidity was quite high,” he shared.
The first runners began arriving at Tropical Park as early as 4 AM. Frankie Ruiz, the director of the Turkey Trot, emphasized the event’s family-friendly nature, stating, “This is a race for the whole family. Families have grown up with us.”
The Turkey Trot offered races for everyone, including kids, who participated in 100 and 300-meter sprints. Ruiz noted, “The 5K and 10K races, along with the children’s events, are some of the most enjoyable of the year.”
For many participants, this race marked a significant milestone. Carla Palmer, a first-time racer, expressed her excitement: “This is my first time running in an organized race. I’m a little nervous, but I love starting this Thanksgiving day actively so I can enjoy all the food I want later. I’m really looking forward to it.”
For over 30 years, the South Florida community has kicked off Thanksgiving celebrations with the Turkey Trot, uniting children, adults, and families in a spirited and athletic environment.
This event not only promotes physical fitness but also fosters community spirit and togetherness during the holiday season. With more people being drawn to such activities, it creates an encouraging atmosphere for health and family bonding.
In conclusion, the Turkey Trot is more than just a race—it’s a cherished tradition that helps kick off the Thanksgiving festivities with joy and camaraderie, inspiring others to embrace an active lifestyle.
