As the Raven Football team gears up for its first match in the 2024 NAIA national tournament playoffs this weekend, defensive end Tai Rutledge will be a key player on the field. Rutledge, a senior at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, balances his football responsibilities with an internship that complements his studies in finance and economics.
Originally from Los Angeles, Rutledge emphasizes the significant impact that playing football has had on his personal development. He notes the lessons of hard work, accountability, and perseverance learned on the field have also translated into success in his academic and professional endeavors. “These lessons have translated extremely well for me in my on-campus roles and during my internship,” he said.
In addition to being a standout athlete, Rutledge is currently interning as a procurement analyst for C.H. Robinson and holds the position of Chief Financial Officer for the Student International Business Council (SIBC) at his college. He is also actively involved on campus, serving as a peer mentor for freshmen football players adjusting to college life.
After transferring to Benedictine during his sophomore year, Rutledge found a sense of belonging that he had been searching for. “The second I stepped foot on this campus, I knew Benedictine was home,” he remarked. He takes pride in mentoring younger players, guiding them as they face the challenges of being away from home and adapting to a new environment. “Being a mentor to the freshman has been awesome. I enjoy watching the progress they make as they navigate through their first semester,” Rutledge shared.
Rutledge acknowledges the profound influence of mentorship in his life, particularly that of Tyler Shephard, the director of the Freedom Fellows program. Despite not being a member of the program, Rutledge credits Shephard for helping him confront and harness adversity as a powerful motivator for achieving his goals.
Reflecting on his journey, Rutledge shares, “From starting at Benedictine to now, I feel like I’m two completely different people.” He attributes his transformation to the college’s mission of community, faith, and scholarship. “Benedictine has showed me what it looks like to have these strong values and carry them out on a daily basis,” he noted, highlighting the importance of embracing personal growth.
