In an unprecedented event, the San Diego Humane Society took in a staggering 274 animals in just 24 hours, marking a record-breaking day for the organization. This influx of pets has left the shelter overwhelmed and over-capacity, as they now care for a total of 1,678 animals in need of adoption. The diverse group of new arrivals includes 50 chicks, 96 guinea pigs, one horse, and 127 dogs and cats.
Nina Thompson from the San Diego Humane Society expressed the range of emotions experienced during this overwhelming intake. “It was an extraordinary day, unlike any other,” she remarked, noting the challenges faced not just by the staff, but also for the owners who had to surrender their beloved pets.
Key among these surrendered animals, 44 dogs and cats came from overcrowded shelters in Los Angeles, while the remaining 230 were not planned intakes. The large number of guinea pigs came from a resident in Escondido who could no longer care for them as they were relocating. They will be spayed or neutered before adoption, although some may be pregnant, indicating that the number could soon increase.
Additionally, the El Cajon campus welcomed 50 chicks that had been ordered online but not picked up at the post office. Thompson highlights the benefits of backyard chickens, stating that they can provide fresh eggs and companionship. Furthermore, a previously abandoned horse, discovered in distress by Tribal Police on the San Pasqual Reservation, has become part of this urgent intake.
The shelter is currently experiencing an increasing trend of approximately 50 kittens being dropped off every day, exacerbating their capacity issues. As they strive to maintain a zero-euthanasia policy, Thompson urges the community for support, whether through donations, fostering, or volunteering. Even sharing their social media posts can make a significant difference in raising awareness and finding homes for these animals.
Despite the somber circumstances surrounding these intakes, there is hope for a positive outcome. Each animal has the potential to find a loving home, and with community support, the San Diego Humane Society can continue to provide the care these animals desperately need.
