The 19th Arlington Turkey Trot saw a spirited gathering of participants despite the drizzly weather on Thursday morning. Among the enthusiastic runners was 10-year-old Jack Gropper, who joyfully took part with his father, Adam. “I kind of left them behind,” Jack humorously recounted, illustrating the energy of the event.
Adam shared his experience, saying, “My son is much faster than me and I slowed him down, but he motivated me at the end and said, ‘Come on dad we have to sprint!’ Then we did, so thanks to him, we finished.” This exchange highlights the sense of camaraderie and encouragement found within the racing community.
The annual Turkey Trot, organized by Christ Church of Arlington, boasted a strong turnout despite the rain. Thousands of participants donned festive turkey costumes, hats, and rain gear, showcasing their enthusiasm for this beloved Thanksgiving tradition. Race director Courtney Weber noted that while some might have chosen to stay indoors due to the weather, the 5K race sold out, allowing them to meet their fundraising goals for the 18 local nonprofits the event supports.
“We bring the community together and we raise about $250,000 for these local charities which is great. So this is the race for Arlington, by Arlington,” Weber stated, emphasizing the significance of community spirit.
The 5K route began and concluded in the Lyons Park neighborhood, winding through Ashton Heights, with roads temporarily closed for the race before reopening after the event.
This year’s Turkey Trot emphasizes resilience and community unity, proving that even unfavorable weather cannot dampen the holiday spirit. With a successful turnout and substantial fundraising, the event continues to strengthen connections among residents while supporting important local causes.
