David Lynch has declared that he will “never retire” despite being diagnosed with emphysema, a condition attributed to his years of smoking. In an interview with Sight & Sound magazine, Lynch discussed his health challenges, revealing that he is confined mostly to his home due to concerns about catching illnesses like Covid-19, which could worsen his condition.
The 79-year-old filmmaker acknowledged his love for smoking, stating, “I have to say that I enjoyed smoking very much, and I do love tobacco – the smell of it, lighting cigarettes on fire.” Despite the enjoyment it brought him, he recognized the health consequences, noting, “But there is a price to pay for this enjoyment, and the price for me is emphysema.”
Lynch, who quit smoking over two years ago, is optimistic about his current health status, stating that he is “in excellent shape except for emphysema.” He expressed gratitude for the concern of his fans, emphasizing his intention to continue working, saying, “I am filled with happiness, and I will never retire.”
In the interview, Lynch talked about the limitations his condition imposes, explaining that he can only walk short distances before feeling out of breath. He mentioned that it would be risky for him to get sick and remarked that he might consider directing projects remotely, although he prefers not to.
Despite these challenges, Lynch shared that he recently pitched an animated project titled Snootworld to Netflix, which was ultimately rejected. He remains hopeful about getting his 2010 screenplay, Antelope Don’t Run No More, produced, stating, “Well, we don’t know what the future will bring, but we remain hopeful.”
Lynch’s last feature film was 2006’s Inland Empire, and he directed the miniseries Twin Peaks: The Return in 2017. He has continued to work on smaller projects, including his recent short film What Did Jack Do?, music videos, and various other creative endeavors on YouTube.
Recently, Lynch released a new music album, Cellophane Memories, in collaboration with Chrystabell, following his 2018 album, Thought Gang, which he created with the late composer Angelo Badalamenti.
