The Kansas Jayhawks football team concluded their 2024 season on Saturday with a disappointing 45-17 loss to the Baylor Bears in Waco, Texas. The defeat put a halt to their hopes of becoming bowl eligible, leaving them with a final record of 5-7.
The game started with some promise for the Jayhawks, who, despite missing an early field goal, managed to score first. Running back Devin Neal rushed for a 19-yard touchdown, giving Kansas a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. However, Baylor quickly answered back, as quarterback Sawyer Robertson connected with Monaray Baldwin for a 36-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 7-7.
A critical moment came later in the first half when Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels threw an interception, allowing Baylor to capitalize and take a 14-7 lead. Kansas was able to narrow the gap with a 26-yard field goal by Tabor Allen, making it a close 14-10.
Unfortunately for Kansas, Baylor extended their lead just before halftime with another touchdown, this one from Robertson to Josh Cameron, who scored from 14 yards out to make it 21-10 at the break.
The second half proved challenging for the Jayhawks. Baylor scored two additional touchdowns to widen their lead to 35-10. Kansas managed to respond with a touchdown from Lawrence Arnold, cutting the deficit to 35-17 late in the third quarter. However, Baylor quickly put the game out of reach, scoring once more before the end of the third, and added a field goal in the fourth quarter for the final 45-17 score.
Despite the outcome, the Jayhawks’ season was marked by initial optimism, including a projected top-five finish in the Big 12. While the record of 5-7 may not reflect their aspirations, the team can look forward to rebuilding and improving in the future.
As the season concludes, Kansas has the opportunity to regroup and focus on next season’s challenges, aiming to convert the lessons learned into success in the following year. The commitment from players and coaching staff promises a hopeful outlook for the Jayhawks as they strive to enhance their performance moving forward.
