Vito the pug has made history at the 2024 National Dog Show by winning the prestigious Best in Show award, marking the first time a pug has taken home this top honor since the event’s inception in 2002. The competition saw over 1,900 dogs representing more than 200 different breeds and varieties compete for top accolades.
Hailing from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Vito displayed an adorable curiosity as he looked up at his handler, Michael Scott, upon the announcement of his win. The show’s judge, George Milutinovich, praised Vito’s striking expression and graceful movements, even inquiring if the pug was aware of his victory. To this, Scott humorously responded, “He’s very smug. I think he knows.”
Vito triumphed over six other finalists, which included impressive canine competitors such as Houston, a clumber spaniel from the sporting group, The Zit, an Ibizan hound from the hound group, Rupert, a Berger Picard from the herding group, Monty, a giant schnauzer from the working group, and JJ, a Lhasa apso from the non-sporting group. The Reserve Best in Show award was won by Verde, a striking rust and black Welsh terrier from the terrier group.
The National Dog Show, a beloved Thanksgiving tradition founded in 1879 and held annually since 1933, has captivated nearly 20 million viewers, according to Purina, the event’s sponsor. This year also saw the debut of a new breed, the Lancashire heeler, which joined the American Kennel Club’s list of official breeds in January.
