Fiji has once again emerged as a leader in global environmental efforts with the recent recognition of the Naidiri Marine Biodiversity Park, an indigenous youth-led initiative in Sigatoka. Manoa Duwai, the park’s president, proudly announced that the project received the esteemed OceanLove Innovation Award 2025 during the Blue Economy World Congress held in Barcelona, Spain. This accolade reinforces Fiji’s commitment to ocean conservation and highlights the critical role of innovation in safeguarding marine ecosystems.
Among 260 submissions from 64 countries, the Naidiri Marine Biodiversity Park distinguished itself by winning in the education category, emphasizing its essential contribution to advancing global ocean-focused initiatives. Established in 2009 in Naidiri Bay, Nadroga, the park has been dedicated to operating a Marine Protected Area, making significant strides in the restoration and preservation of Fiji’s rich marine biodiversity.
The local community actively manages this vital resource, ensuring a robust connection to their ancestral lands and coastal waters. Visitors to the park can experience breathtaking coral reef snorkeling and guided tours of the indigenous village, providing a deeper understanding of the community’s cultural heritage and commitment to conservation.
In addition to Fiji’s achievement, the award ceremony recognized other noteworthy initiatives in marine conservation globally. The second award went to Egypt’s Very Nile for its efforts in promoting the health of the Nile River ecosystem. Tanzania’s Husna Amimu Msola was honored with the third award for her impactful environmental initiatives, while the fourth and fifth awards were given to the Association for Community Awareness in Cameroon and Eco-Dahab, led by Nadine Wahab in Egypt, for their focus on sustainable community projects.
Fiji’s reputation for sustainable tourism and marine conservation continues to gain international recognition, building on earlier accolades featured in platforms such as National Geographic, which branded Fiji as a must-visit destination. The nation’s steadfast dedication to safeguarding its ecological heritage while fostering local involvement and economic benefits illustrates a promising future for both the environment and the communities dependent on it.
