UC Santa Cruz alumni are set to gather on April 11 to celebrate the life and contributions of Tom Lehrer, a cherished math educator and renowned American musician, singer-songwriter, and satirist, who passed away last summer at the age of 97.
Lehrer, who was part of UCSC’s faculty from 1972 until his retirement in 2001, taught a unique course titled The American Musical from 1975 to 1991. This selective class required students to audition, and only 15 were chosen each year. Over its 17-year run, the course attracted a total of 255 students. Lehrer’s performances at the Stevenson College Wagstaff Fireside Lounge consistently sold out, making it a fitting venue for the upcoming celebration.
Known for his sharp wit and intellect, Lehrer was a child prodigy, earning his undergraduate degree from Harvard University at just 18 years old, followed by a master’s degree in mathematics at 19. His most popular songs include “Poisoning Pigeons in the Park,” “The Elements,” and “The Masochism Tango,” characterized by a blend of humor and social commentary that set him apart in 20th-century music and comedy.
Alumnus Chris Scott, who took Lehrer’s musical theater class in 1978, fondly remembers Lehrer as “wicked smart” and recalls the memorable gatherings at Lehrer’s home, where students enjoyed music and camaraderie. “He is really dear in our hearts, because when you look at it in retrospect, it was just a golden opportunity to grow,” Scott reflected.
The Celebration of Life event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring videos of Lehrer, stories from alumni, and a musical singalong led by Luke Shepherd, UCSC’s senior lead staff accompanist and music lecturer. For those unable to attend in person, a Zoom option will allow friends and admirers from around the world to join in honoring Lehrer’s legacy.
This event represents not only a tribute to Lehrer’s significant impact on both his students and the music world but also a gathering that showcases the vibrant community formed around his teachings and musical talent.
