PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns have officially waived guard Cole Anthony, as confirmed by multiple reports. ESPN’s Shams Charania broke the news, stating, “The Phoenix Suns have waived guard Cole Anthony, sources tell ESPN.” Anthony, who previously averaged 6.7 points over 35 appearances with the Milwaukee Bucks, was brought to Phoenix during the trade deadline along with Amir Coffey.
While Coffey has found his place on the court, Anthony struggled to make an impact. Reports about his impending release had circulated for weeks, initially highlighted by Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro. Following a string of injuries on the team, Suns coach Jordan Ott commented on the situation, noting, “It’s still the same. There hasn’t been much change, but we have had injuries and that’s kind of where it’s at.”
In their official press release, the Suns provided more insight into Anthony’s career, describing him as a player currently in his sixth NBA season. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 185 pounds, he has averaged 12.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.8 assists in 355 career games. After being selected by the Orlando Magic as the 15th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Anthony’s journey has seen him spend this season with the Bucks before the trade.
The Suns now look to capitalize on this roster change. Gambadoro indicated that this move opens the door for Jamaree Bouyea to be transitioned from a two-way contract to a standard deal ahead of the March 4 deadline. This adjustment reflects the team’s desire to solidify its guard rotation as they head toward the closing weeks of the regular season. Phoenix, currently positioned seventh in the Western Conference, is eyeing an opportunity to advance in the standings and avoid the play-in tournament, trailing the Los Angeles Lakers by just one game.
While it’s unfortunate for Anthony, there is optimism that he will find opportunities with another team. For the Suns, this move marks a strategic step as they gear up for a critical postseason run, with less than 20 games remaining in the regular season.
