Fiji’s advancements in rural electrification were prominently showcased at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, demonstrating how renewable energy is transforming the lives of rural and maritime communities while simultaneously enhancing long-term climate resilience. During the High-Level Energy Dialogue on Catalysing Rural Resilience, Dr. Sivendra Michael, the Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, highlighted the Fiji Rural Electrification Fund (FREF) as a blueprint for employing clean energy to promote resilience, equity, and opportunities for vulnerable populations.
The program has successfully delivered clean and dependable electricity to over 6,500 residents across 20 rural communities. “Every solar panel we install powers opportunity and strengthens livelihoods,” stated Dr. Michael, highlighting the significant benefits of renewable energy. Central to this initiative is the development of solar mini grids in locations such as Yadrana and Salia in Lau, Kioa in Cakaudrove, and Yacata, all slated for completion by May 2026. Each system is designed to withstand Category 5 cyclones and will be managed by community cooperatives to ensure sustainability.
Recently, assessments have been conducted for 21 additional sites in Kadavu, Lomaiviti, and Lau, with plans to expand infrastructure to seven new communities. Dr. Michael pointed out that the early achievements observed on Vio Island continue to guide future investments, reflecting Fiji’s steadfast commitment to renewable energy strategies.
Dr. Michael also acknowledged the continued support from the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific while emphasizing the critical need to facilitate access to climate finance for smaller islands and communities. He reaffirmed Fiji’s ambitious goals of achieving 100 percent renewable energy by 2030 and reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, showcasing the island nation’s dedication to sustainable development.
