Driving for Richard Childress Racing after leaving Joe Gibbs Racing, Busch has faced a challenging transition, including a notable 93-race winless streak. However, his performance on Wednesday, where he clocked a lap speed of 183.925 mph, reflects a promising start for the season. “Sounds really good right now — being able to qualify on my first pole for the Daytona 500, that’s pretty special,” Busch expressed, donning custom-designed Olympic-themed racing shoes.
Team owner Richard Childress emphasized the significance of this moment for Busch, stating, “Kyle, we’ve got to get him this 500.” The last time Richard Childress Racing claimed the pole position for this prestigious race was in 2014 with Austin Dillon, who subsequently won in 2018.
Chase Briscoe, last year’s pole sitter, qualified second this year, showcasing the camaraderie and excitement surrounding the event. “It’s a really big deal for myself,” said Briscoe, conveying his eagerness and the enthusiastic support from his sponsors.
While 37 drivers are locked into the race, the definitive starting order will be confirmed after two qualifying races on Thursday night. Among those already secured, seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson is vying for a chance in the race, bringing his experience as a two-time Daytona 500 winner into play.
Corey Heim and Justin Allgaier have also claimed the remaining open spots through the time trials. Heim, making his Daytona 500 debut as the last year’s Truck Series champion, expressed his excitement about joining the event. “Kind of nerve-wracking for sure… Just blessed to be a part of the team,” he said.
