Bears’ Jaylon Johnson Eyes Return to Practice as 21-Day Window Opens

Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson is set to return to practice this Friday, which initiates a crucial 21-day period for the team to decide whether to elevate him from injured reserve to the active roster. If they do not act within this window, Johnson will be sidelined for the remainder of the season.

While Johnson is eager to return, he will not play this Sunday against the Vikings as he continues to recover from surgery to repair a groin muscle that he injured during Week 2 against the Lions. Coach Ben Johnson remarked that Johnson may need additional weeks to regain his fitness, noting that the Bears have upcoming games against the Steelers next week, the Eagles on November 28, and the Packers on December 7.

Johnson has faced challenges this season, as he also missed all of training camp due to a prior groin injury. Coach Johnson expressed understanding of the frustrations Johnson has faced this year, stating, “This year has not gone the way he really envisioned it.” He emphasized that Johnson is highly motivated to return and has been working hard to reach this point. The coaching staff now has the responsibility to ensure he is adequately prepared for the remainder of the season.

The potential return of Johnson would provide a significant boost to a cornerback unit that has been severely impacted by injuries throughout the year. Kyler Gordon is currently on IR due to a hamstring injury but is expected to return later in the season. Additionally, Terell Smith is out for the year with a knee injury sustained during preseason.

Coach Johnson expressed anticipation for the return of Johnson, Gordon, and linebacker T.J. Edwards, who is dealing with both a hamstring injury and a broken hand. These players were expected to play key roles at the beginning of the season, and Coach Johnson is eager to see them back on the field together. This hopeful outlook highlights the team’s determination to strengthen their defense as they navigate this challenging season.
