HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Medrick Burnett Jr., a linebacker for Alabama A&M University, continues to fight for his life in the hospital after suffering a severe head injury during the Magic City Classic in October. The 20-year-old player, originally from California, endured a head-on collision in the game, leading to critical health complications, including multiple brain bleeds and swelling. His sister, Dominece James, has set up a GoFundMe campaign to support the family during this challenging time, which has successfully raised over $26,000.
In a detailed update shared on the fundraising page, the family composed that Medrick required a tube to alleviate pressure in his brain. Unfortunately, after two days of severe pressure, doctors conducted a craniotomy as a last resort to save his life. Burnett, who transferred to Alabama A&M from Grambling State, played in seven games this season before his unfortunate injury.
On Wednesday, Alabama A&M University initially released a statement erroneously declaring that Burnett had passed away, but this information was quickly retracted. The university later confirmed that he is still alive, much to the relief of his family and community. Denise Burnett, his mother, indicated they would provide a public statement regarding their ordeal when the appropriate time comes.
AAMU Athletics has issued an apology for the false announcement, expressing relief that Medrick remains in stable condition. The community continues to rally support for the family, showcasing the power of unity and hope during such trying times.
This situation highlights the tremendous strength and resilience of not just athletes but their families as well. The outpouring of support through the GoFundMe also reflects the compassion within the community, bringing hope that Medrick will overcome this significant challenge.
