HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Medrick Burnett Jr., an Alabama A&M linebacker who was severely injured during the Magic City Classic in October, continues to receive care in a Birmingham hospital, as confirmed by his family.
The redshirt freshman from California suffered a traumatic injury due to a head-on collision during the game, resulting in multiple brain bleeds and swelling. His family reported that in an effort to manage his condition, he initially had to undergo procedures to relieve pressure in his brain, including a craniotomy, which was deemed a last resort to safeguard his life.
Burnett, who transferred to Alabama A&M from Grambling State, played in seven games this season and celebrated his 20th birthday in October. A GoFundMe page started by his sister, Dominece James, has raised over $26,000 to support the family during this difficult time.
Earlier in the week, there was confusion when Alabama A&M University officials mistakenly announced Burnett Jr.’s death based on information from a family member, a statement which they later retracted. The university expressed regret for this misinformation and confirmed that Burnett Jr. remains in stable condition, offering hope to his family and community.
Denise Burnett, Medrick’s mother, stated that they will share more details about their journey when they are ready.
This situation, while challenging, emphasizes the importance of support from the community, as seen in the fundraising efforts, and showcases the resilience and strength present in times of hardship. Families and friends rallying together can often provide a much-needed ray of hope in such scenarios.
As news of stability in Medrick’s condition spreads, it serves as a reminder of the potential for recovery and the impact of collective support in overcoming adversity.
