New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed inquiries regarding his wife, first lady Rama Duwaji, after a report highlighted her past social media activity. The Jewish Insider published a story revealing that on October 7, 2023, a day after the Hamas attack and hostage crisis in Israel, Duwaji liked an Instagram post that referred to the events as “breaking the walls of apartheid.” The post criticized Israel’s government and depicted Gaza’s residents as “isolated and segregated, intentionally kept in poverty.”

Duwaji engaged with this post, which was liked by approximately 35,000 others, while she had not yet married Mamdani. It described Hamas’ actions as “resistance” and claimed that any retaliatory actions from Israel would result in punishment for the local population. Additionally, on the same day, Duwaji liked other posts featuring the phrase “from the river to the sea,” a slogan often associated with pro-Palestinian advocacy that has drawn criticism from many Jewish organizations for allegedly calling for the elimination of Israel.

During an unrelated press conference in the Bronx, Mamdani was questioned about the appropriateness of discussing his wife’s opinions, which she openly shares through her art and social media. In his response, Mamdani emphasized the importance of being a representative for all New Yorkers while defending Duwaji’s privacy. “My wife is the love of my life and she’s also a private person who has held no formal position on my campaign or in my City Hall,” he said. “I, however, was elected to represent all eight and a half million people in the city, and I believe that it’s my responsibility because of that role to answer any questions about my thoughts and my policies and my decisions.”

Mamdani’s critical stance on Israeli policies has prompted concern within the Jewish community. He is the second politician recently confronted about their spouse’s social media activity; Congressman Dan Goldman also faced scrutiny this week over his wife’s posts that included controversial imagery, prompting him to clarify that their opinions do not necessarily align.

This scenario highlights the ongoing discussion around the intersection of personal beliefs and public representation, as both Mamdani and Goldman navigate the complexities of their family members’ social media presence in light of their own political responsibilities.
