On Sunday, former President Donald Trump took to social media to assert that the “leadership of Ukraine has expressed zero gratitude for our efforts” regarding the ongoing war with Russia. However, this claim is categorically inaccurate.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his gratitude to the United States on numerous occasions since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine commenced in early 2022. An extensive review reveals that Zelensky has thanked Trump personally, as well as the American people, in at least 78 documented instances. His expressions of gratitude have come in various forms, including social media posts, official remarks, and in conversations with American officials.
Most recently, Zelensky reiterated his appreciation during a meeting last week in Kyiv with Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, stating, “We are very grateful to President Trump, to the United States, to the entire American people.” He had also highlighted Trump’s contributions at a press conference in Greece where he acknowledged efforts to supply energy assistance to Ukraine.
Zelensky’s gratitude has been a constant during the war, sharing sentiments via platforms such as X (formerly Twitter). The Ukrainian leader has consistently thanked American leaders and citizens for their military and humanitarian aid. For instance, in posts over the past two years, Zelensky expressed his commendation for military support, gratitude for America’s diplomatic efforts, and recognition of the vital aid that has helped Ukraine defend against aggression.
Despite the clear expressions of gratitude from Zelensky, Trump’s claim resurfaced amid a backdrop of critique towards Zelensky’s pushback against a controversial 28-point plan from the Trump administration aimed at resolving the war, which included concessions to Russia—a plan Zelensky did not endorse.
In addition to the recent statements, historical instances of gratitude from Zelensky date back to early 2022, where he thanked President Biden and his administration for unprecedented support. Over the months, Zelensky has made his appreciation clear before Congress, public forums, and in private meetings.
This ongoing narrative of gratitude illustrates the robust partnership between Ukraine and the United States, underscoring the importance of international solidarity during one of the most critical times in Ukraine’s history. As the conflict continues, such expressions reinforce a central message of appreciation and cooperation, highlighting the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people in their struggle for sovereignty.
