Zach Edey, the former Purdue basketball star, has found himself in a legal situation after being stopped for driving at 101 mph in a 55-mph zone. The incident occurred on May 1 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, where police reported that Edey was driving a Kia Sorento when he was caught speeding by a state trooper.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Edey was traveling northbound when he passed the trooper’s vehicle, which was headed south. After the trooper pursued him, Edey made a turn and pulled over on Tippecanoe County Road 700 South. When questioned, Edey, 23, who recently joined the Memphis Grizzlies after a standout performance in the NCAA championship game, stated that he was attempting to pass another car, which he said led to his excessive speed.
Edey is facing a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving and has an initial court hearing scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Monday in Tippecanoe Superior Court 6.
Despite this incident, Edey remains a notable figure in basketball, having made headlines for his performance at Purdue. This incident should serve as a reminder for young athletes about the importance of responsible driving, particularly in the spotlight following their sporting achievements.
The engagement and support from Purdue’s basketball community is evident, as they continue to celebrate Edey’s contributions and achievements, including a recent post featuring him among fellow players and alumni.
