WEST LAFAYETTE − Even though Purdue faced a challenging first half against top-ranked Michigan, trailing by 16 points, Boilermakers fans had a heartwarming moment to celebrate when former player Zach Edey returned to campus during NBA All-Star weekend.

Edey, currently a center for the Memphis Grizzlies and Purdue’s all-time leading scorer, was greeted by enthusiastic cheers when he made his appearance on Tuesday, Feb. 17. The emotional highlight came during halftime when Edey assisted 89-year-old Gene Keady, Purdue’s all-time winningest coach, back to his seat. This touching moment resonated with fans, showcasing Edey’s character and respect for his former mentor.

Keady, who racked up 512 victories over 25 seasons at Purdue, has often been seen at the Boilermakers’ home games, and his bond with Edey extends back to their time together in the program. Fans will remember that in 2024, during a pivotal moment in Edey’s career when he scored 40 points against Tennessee to help Purdue secure a Final Four berth, he cut down a piece of the net after the game and graciously gifted it to Keady as a symbol of their relationship.

This gesture further emphasizes the strong bonds formed through sports at Purdue, reminding us of the impact athletes can have both on and off the court. As the highlight of the day, it was a moment of warmth amidst the competitive atmosphere of college basketball.
