Yvette Nicole Brown has addressed her former co-star Chevy Chase’s new documentary, “I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not,” in a strong statement shared on Instagram. The documentary, directed by Jay Chandrasekhar, revisits Chase’s tumultuous time on the set of “Community,” including his controversial exit following a scandal in 2012.

In her statement, Brown emphasized her desire to speak for herself, clarifying that anyone discussing her in the context of the documentary has not communicated with her directly about their claims. “Anyone currently speaking FOR or ABOUT me with perceived authority is speaking without EVER speaking to me about the things they claim to know about,” she stated, underscoring a need for accuracy in representations of her experiences.

The controversy stemmed from an incident involving Chase that led to his departure from the NBC sitcom after its fourth season. In the documentary, Chandrasekhar recalled an altercation that involved a racially charged comment directed at Brown, which resulted in her walking off set. He noted that tensions between them were palpable during their time together on the show.

Brown’s statement expressed her discontent with people trying to speak on her behalf. She conveyed her commitment to maintaining integrity and felt that discussing certain past issues would be unproductive. “When I choose not to speak on something it’s because it will not change a thing and is most likely tawdry, low-vibrational and dumb,” she asserted.

Chase’s exit from “Community” wasn’t solely due to the incident with Brown; it also stemmed from ongoing conflicts with creator Dan Harmon, which the documentary addresses. Chase, who experienced backlash from both his co-stars and fans, reportedly left the series amid a series of public disputes and creative disagreements.

“I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not,” which provides an insight into the actor’s career and challenges, is set to premiere on January 1 at 8 p.m. EST on CNN, inviting both fans and critics to re-evaluate Chase’s legacy in Hollywood.

Overall, Brown’s response showcases her determination to ensure her voice is clear amid the controversy, while addressing broader themes of respect and accountability within the entertainment industry.
