Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, expressed a desire to strengthen relations with neighboring India, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive diplomatic connection. He acknowledged, however, that misinformation and the spread of fake news frequently complicate these relations. “We want to build the best relationship with India. They’re our neighbour. We don’t want to have a basic problem with them,” Yunus remarked, reflecting the ongoing challenges.
Since his government took over following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, Yunus noted a growing frustration among Bangladeshis due to online disinformation. He described the nation as feeling “jittery and angry,” as these inaccuracies continue to exacerbate tensions. “We try to get over this anger. But the whole barrage of things keeps happening in cyberspace,” Yunus explained.
The backdrop of these comments is a politically charged environment in Bangladesh, particularly since the dissolution of Hasina’s Awami League party, which Yunus’s administration has accused of corruption and authoritarianism. The relationship with India has also been strained, especially since Hasina sought refuge there.
In a significant announcement, Yunus stated that national elections are scheduled for April 2026, dismissing calls from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for earlier polls. He assured the public that the government aims to conduct “the most free, fair, competitive and acceptable elections in history,” emphasizing reforms related to justice and electoral transparency.
Despite facing scrutiny from the international community regarding his government’s treatment of opposition groups, Yunus remains committed to a transparent electoral process. His focus appears to be on restoring stability and fostering a cooperative dynamic with India, showing a willingness to confront challenges while looking forward to elections that could shape the nation’s political landscape.
