YouTube TV is set to raise its monthly subscription fee from $73 to $83 starting in January 2024, as announced in a letter to its subscribers on Thursday. The price increase is attributed to the escalating expenses associated with content acquisition and ongoing enhancements to the service’s quality.

The platform has boosted its appeal to sports fans by introducing features like a multiview option that lets viewers watch up to four games simultaneously. YouTube pays over $2 billion each season for NFL Sunday Ticket rights, and while this investment may lead to substantial losses—reportedly close to $10 billion between 2023 and 2029—Google aims to leverage this exclusive content beyond just the Sunday Ticket offering. Recently, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that YouTube had generated $50 billion in ad and subscription revenue over the past year.

YouTube TV, which surpassed 8 million subscribers, is rapidly becoming a leader among virtual cable services and is predicted to become the largest pay-TV platform in the U.S. by 2026. The company reassured subscribers that it will continue to offer a plethora of exciting shows and live events throughout the new year.

Since its launch in 2017 with an introductory price of $35, YouTube TV has experienced several price increases, the most recent jump occurring in March 2023. January’s adjustment will mark the fourth price increase in the platform’s history.

Sports events play a significant role in attracting subscribers to streaming services, with the NFL playoffs historically being a major contributor to viewership. College football’s postseason is also gaining traction, with the championship game scheduled to air on ESPN just a week after the new YouTube TV pricing takes effect.

While YouTube TV navigates this transition, alternatives like Sling offer competitive pricing, including a $40 plan that includes ESPN, TNT, and various local channels. Subscribers can still catch key events like the Super Bowl on Fox, which has offered the game for free via the Fox Sports app in the past.
