The upcoming U20 competition is set to invigorate the second leg of the Agromarketing Grassroots Fiji 7s in Bua next month, reflecting the growing enthusiasm shown during the recent series at HFC Bank Stadium. Organizers have confirmed that 24 U20 teams will participate in Bua, significantly outnumbering the men’s and women’s teams, which stand at 14 and 10, respectively.
The surge in youth participation is a direct response to the remarkable turnout at the first leg held in Suva, where the event attracted 20 U20 teams, surpassing the initial goal of 12 teams. Gilbert Vakalalabure, the CEO of Fiji Sports Council, noted that although the tournament typically allows for 16 local teams from Bua and eight teams from other regions, the overwhelming interest in youth involvement has prompted an increase in U20 entries.
“The Bua leg will feature more U20 teams than men’s teams,” Vakalalabure mentioned. He further indicated that this move is part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing pathways for young athletes, providing competitive environments that adhere to national standards both on and off the field.
Moreover, the Bua event will also include volleyball, which is expected to garner substantial community support and contribute to the event’s overall appeal. With this combination of youth rugby, alongside senior men’s and women’s competitions, as well as volleyball, the Bua leg is poised to become a vibrant multi-sport festival. This initiative goes beyond mere competition; it aims to foster community spirit while engaging youth in beneficial activities, paving the way for future generations of athletes. The emphasis on nurturing young talent indicates a hopeful future for sports in Fiji, as it seeks to unearth and develop the next wave of sporting stars.
