Youngest Graduate in Fiji’s Sustainable Forestry Training Boosts Local Livelihoods

In a significant accomplishment for sustainable forestry and local livelihoods, 44 participants have graduated from an intensive three-week training program on tree harvesting and portable sawmill operations in Sese Village, Saqani, Cakaudrove. Organized by the Fiji Forestry Training Centre, this program aimed to enhance local capabilities in sustainable timber processing, emphasizing skills crucial for both environmental conservation and community economic growth.

Among those who completed the program was 16-year-old Farasiko Naisoko, a Form 4 student from Saqani High School, recognized as the youngest participant. His involvement highlights a rising interest among youth in forestry and the community’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of sustainable development leaders.

The training included essential modules focusing on manual harvesting techniques, sawmill operations, and forest management. Facilitators expressed that the initiative not only aims to create skilled professionals ready to contribute to responsible resource management but also promotes economic activity within local communities.

With these new qualifications, graduates will play a key role in bolstering sustainable forestry practices that ensure the protection of forest ecosystems while generating long-term economic benefits for their communities. This aligns with broader efforts in Fiji to empower youth and enhance community resilience through skill development and training.

Similar initiatives in Fiji, such as Malakai Sevudredre’s workshops on sustainable forestry practices and the government’s support for vocational training, reflect a strong commitment to developing a skilled workforce capable of driving sustainable growth. These concerted efforts underline the importance of training and community involvement in not only preserving environmental resources but also creating opportunities for economic advancement.

As the graduates embark on their new journey, their stories of growth and determination serve as an inspiring reminder of the transformative power of education and skill training, fostering hope for a greener and more sustainable future in Fiji.
