Young Voters Take Charge: Robbinsdale Schools Celebrate Registration Day

Robbinsdale School District Students Encourage Voter Registration

On Tuesday, the Robbinsdale area celebrated National Voter Registration Day with initiatives aimed at engaging young voters. Efforts across Robbinsdale Area Schools included informational booths set up in the cafeterias of Cooper and Armstrong High Schools.

At Armstrong, Nancy Intermill, along with a team of volunteers, attracted students with a colorful booth adorned with stickers and snacks. As students approached, Intermill inquired whether they were registered to vote, informing those aged 16 and older about the option to pre-register, while students 18 and older could register on-site.

“It’s important for them to know the opportunities available if they stay informed,” said Intermill, who serves as the voter services chair for the League of Women Voters of Crystal-New Hope-East Plymouth-Robbinsdale. This nonpartisan organization aims to increase voter participation.

“When individuals are registered, it becomes a part of their mindset. That’s what democracy is about,” Intermill emphasized.

One of the enthusiastic young voters at Armstrong is Ari White, who recently turned 18. “I’m really excited. I’ve been researching both candidates a lot,” she shared. Ari’s parents instilled in her the significance of voting, and she expressed hope that her peers would also take the step to register.

“Voting is a privilege and an incredible right we have in America,” Ari stated. “In other parts of the world, people often lack a voice in decisions that affect their lives and communities.”

Robbinsdale Superintendent Teri Staloch also visited the booth, expressing enthusiasm about the students’ engagement. “Our goal is to empower students to understand that their voices matter,” Staloch remarked.

Additionally, the district took part in a live virtual event hosted by the Minnesota Secretary of State, allowing students from Robbinsdale Academy-Highview and Robbinsdale Virtual Academy to participate.

In Minnesota, voters have the option for same-day registration. For details about voting, registering, and finding polling places, residents can consult the Secretary of State’s website.
