New York City FC has announced the signing of goalkeeper Mac Learned, midfielder Peter Molinari, and forward Seymour Reid to short-term agreements from their MLS NEXT Pro affiliate, New York City FC II, in preparation for the upcoming 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match. The team will be facing the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, a USL Championship side, in the Round of 32 tonight, May 7 at 7 PM ET, with the match available for viewing on Paramount+ and CBS Sports Network.
Mac Learned has made six appearances for New York City II this season, securing one clean sheet. Having participated in preseason with the First Team, he quickly transitioned to the second team before this season.
Peter Molinari is making his fourth and final short-term signing of the season after previously signing three for MLS play, contributing seven starts for New York City FC II. He has a promising future ahead, set to join the First Team as a homegrown player in 2027.
Seymour Reid gained attention earlier this season when he became the club’s youngest player to debut in the First Team, having come on as a substitute against the Columbus Crew in March. He has made significant contributions in the form of four goals across nine appearances for New York City FC II. Reid’s journey continues as he is expected to join the First Team as a homegrown player next season.
Under league rules, the club is permitted to sign players aged 25 or younger from their MLS NEXT Pro affiliate for up to four short-term agreements per season. Each of these players may appear in up to two MLS league matches, as well as any number of non-league games during their agreement periods.
New York City FC returns to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup this year after their affiliate made history last year by reaching the Round of 16, a remarkable achievement for a reserve team. The club has participated in the tournament from 2015 to 2023, with notable runs to the Quarterfinals in 2019 and 2022, showcasing their competitive spirit and growth in the tournament over the years.
The addition of these young talents not only strengthens the squad for the current match but also reflects the club’s commitment to fostering emerging players for future opportunities.
