As has become customary in previous years, three promising players from the Barça Academy Residency in Arizona have been invited to train with the youth teams at FC Barcelona. This initiative aims to assess their development in both performance and attitude. The talented youths selected for this year’s program are Graham Ford, Makai Wells, and Jorge Padilla, all of whom participated in last year’s MLS playoffs—a competition that continues to gain traction year after year.
Graham Ford, who is currently training with the U16A team, first caught the attention of coaches during a training camp last year. As a left-footed central midfielder, he excels in maintaining possession, recovering the ball, and demonstrating a high understanding of the game.
Makai Wells is also part of the U16A squad, making his inaugural visit to Barcelona. Known for his prowess as a right winger, Wells shines in his passing abilities and is particularly effective in one-on-one situations. He only joined Barça Academy Pro Arizona last year, making his progress even more impressive.
Jorge Padilla is training with the U19B team and is experiencing the Ciutat Esportiva for the first time after spending four years at the Arizona center. He had an impressive showing in the MLS U16 playoffs, which significantly contributed to his selection for this opportunity in Europe. A right-sided midfielder, Padilla’s strong tackling and direct playing style often position him at the forefront of attacking opportunities. His dedication and hard work have been pivotal in earning him this trip to Barcelona.
Barça Residency Academy USA, established in 2017, is currently the only such program run by FC Barcelona in North America. Located in Casa Grande, Arizona, it features eight soccer fields and a study center affiliated with Arizona State University. The academy is also unique as the only Barça Academy to have a team participating in MLS Next, the premier youth league in the United States, ensuring that players receive top-tier training aligned with the esteemed Barça methodologies.
This initiative exemplifies the ongoing commitment to nurturing talent in youth soccer, providing aspiring players with invaluable experiences that can shape their futures. As these young athletes train at one of the world’s most prestigious football clubs, they symbolize the strong potential of soccer development in the United States and the avenues available for talented players.
