Mel Brooks is set to return as Yogurt in a sequel to his iconic 1987 film “Spaceballs.” Titled humorously as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film,” the project is being led by director Josh Greenbaum and screenwriters Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad, who is also starring in the film. The sequel is slated for theatrical release by Amazon MGM Studios in 2027.

The original “Spaceballs” became a cult classic, cleverly parodying beloved sci-fi franchises like “Star Wars” and “Alien.” Mel Brooks, a legendary figure in Hollywood known for an array of comedic hits such as “The Producers,” “Blazing Saddles,” and “Young Frankenstein,” will be joined by Gad, whose rise to fame began with roles in Broadway’s “The Book of Mormon” and Disney’s “Frozen.”

While details about the rest of the cast and plot are yet to be revealed, the collaboration between established filmmakers Samit and Hernandez, known for their previous works on animated hits like “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” adds to the anticipation. Producers for the project include Hollywood heavyweights Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody from Imagine Entertainment.

The return of the beloved Yogurt character and Brooks’ celebrated comedic touch promises to deliver a nostalgic yet innovative experience for fans of the original film. With the creative team at the helm and Brooks’ longstanding reputation for humor, excitement builds around how this sequel will honor its predecessor while introducing fresh elements. The project is a hopeful reminder of the enduring legacy of comedy in cinema and the joy it continues to bring to audiences.
