YNW Melly’s witness tampering case is set to go to trial later this month, with proceedings scheduled to commence on January 21. On January 5, the Florida rapper appeared in Broward County Court for a motion hearing where both the prosecution and defense presented motions regarding the admissibility of evidence in this upcoming trial.
Melly, who has been incarcerated since 2019 as he contends with a double-murder case, faces additional witness tampering charges stemming from events in 2023 after his initial trial ended in a mistrial. His double murder retrial has faced numerous delays and is now slated for 2027. He stands accused of the October 2018 killings of his childhood friends, Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams, which he allegedly staged to resemble a drive-by shooting.
In October 2023, prosecutors alleged that Melly attempted to dissuade his ex-girlfriend, Mariah Hamilton, and her mother, Felicia Holmes, from testifying in his first trial, leading to the new witness tampering charges against him.
Notably, YNW Melly is seeking new legal representation for these trials. In September, he appointed attorneys Drew Findling and Carey Haughwout, following concerns regarding his previous attorney, Raven Liberty, who is under investigation for alleged witness tampering.
In related developments, YNW Melly’s co-defendant, YNW Bortlen, accepted a plea deal in September, receiving a sentence of 10 years in prison along with six years of supervised release.
As Melly prepares for his upcoming trials, the legal landscape surrounding his case continues to evolve, highlighting the complexities of the judicial process and the challenges that defendants can face. The upcoming hearings are expected to shed light on the evidence and arguments that will be crucial in determining Melly’s fate.
