Students at Yasawa South Secondary School in Waya Lailai, Yasawa, have a new opportunity to pursue secondary education locally, thanks to the school’s official inauguration last month by Education Minister Aseri Radrodro. This development eliminates the necessity for students to travel to distant towns and cities for their education, which is a significant benefit for families in the area.
The newly established school will serve multiple nearby villages, including Namara, Naboro, Yamata, Yalobi, Natawa, Nalauwaki, and Vuwa, as well as students from Namara Village School, Ratu Naivalu Memorial School, and Viwa Island School. The creation of Yasawa South Secondary School follows a request from the community for local secondary options, a need emphasized during Mr. Radrodro’s visit last year when he inaugurated a new ablution block at the school.
In his speech to the inaugural Year 9 students and the school’s seven teaching staff, Mr. Radrodro highlighted the significance of this new facility. He pointed out that it not only reduces travel costs for families but also allows children to stay close to their communities. He urged the students to excel in their studies, drawing inspiration from the success of Waidina and Vunisea secondary schools, which achieved a remarkable 100 percent pass rate for Year 12 last year.
“This school is an investment in the future of our children, our community, and our nation,” stated Mr. Radrodro. To ensure a smooth start for the school year, the management committee has temporarily repurposed hostel facilities into classrooms, facilitating an effective learning environment right from the beginning.
The establishment of Yasawa South Secondary School marks a crucial advancement in providing educational opportunities for local youth, thereby contributing to community growth and fostering a culture of academic success. This initiative represents not only a commitment to education but also a hopeful vision for the future of Yasawa’s young residents.
