Yankees Welcome Back Pitcher JT Brubaker: A Comeback Story Unfolds

The New York Yankees have reinstated right-handed pitcher JT Brubaker from the 60-day injured list, making the official announcement after a report by Robert Murray of FanSided. With this move, the Yankees’ 40-man roster is now fully occupied. To accommodate Brubaker’s return, the Yankees optioned right-hander Scott Effross following last night’s game.

Brubaker, now 31, has been part of the Yankees organization for approximately a year and a half since being acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates in March 2024. The Yankees traded a player to be named later—identified as infielder Keiner Delgado—and cash in exchange for Brubaker as well as international bonus pool space. Although the Yankees acquired him expecting he would return after rehabilitation, Brubaker faced several setbacks, including an oblique strain that delayed his recovery progress.

Originally undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2023, Brubaker’s journey back to the mound has been challenging. He had begun a rehab assignment in June but was sidelined again due to injury. After limited appearances in the fall, it was anticipated he would be ready for the 2025 season. He and the Yankees agreed to a salary of $1.82 million to avoid arbitration, but an unexpected injury—breaking three ribs while evading a comebacker—landed him on the injured list yet again.

Recently, however, Brubaker has shown promise during his rehab, completing 21.1 minor league innings with a solid 2.95 earned run average. The Yankees have increased his workload, with Brubaker pitching five innings in his latest minor league outing. He is expected to contribute in a long relief role, supporting the rotation led by pitchers Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, Clarke Schmidt, Will Warren, and Ryan Yarbrough.

Brubaker’s return represents a significant opportunity for both him and the Yankees. With over five years of major league experience, he cannot be sent down to the minors without consent, and if he remains on the roster for the rest of the year, he will reach six years of service time, qualifying him for free agency. This return could be a pivotal moment, showcasing Brubaker’s resilience and potential as he aims to make a significant impact in his time with the Yankees.
