The New York Yankees are actively seeking to enhance their pitching rotation as they prepare for the upcoming season, and the Miami Marlins could be an option for a strategic trade. A recent proposal by Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter suggests that the Yankees might consider trading outfielder Jasson Dominguez to acquire starting pitcher Edward Cabrera from the Marlins, contingent on the Yankees successfully securing a new outfield ace.
Reuter highlighted that trading Dominguez, whom he refers to as “the Martian,” to the rebuilding Marlins in exchange for Cabrera could bolster the Yankees’ rotation as they await the returns of star pitchers Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón. Additionally, Reuter mentioned a backup plan involving a trade with the Reds for pitchers Brady Singer and Chase Petty.
Jasson Dominguez, 22, has shown flashes of potential, hitting 10 home runs and driving in 47 runs while registering 98 hits this season. However, defensively, he has struggled, finishing with -10 outs above average, ranking him in the second percentile for fielding. His considerable speed and arm strength, however, remain promising attributes that suggest he could evolve into a more competent defender with experience.
On the pitching front, Edward Cabrera finished the last season with a commendable 3.53 ERA over 26 starts, marking one of the best performances of his career. His addition to the Yankees’ rotation would be critical, particularly in light of the uncertainty surrounding the returns of Cole, Rodón, and Clarke Schmidt from injury. The current rotation comprises Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, and Ryan Yarbrough, with Yarbrough likely shifting back to the bullpen once everyone is healthy.
The success of a potential trade hinges on the Yankees’ ability to acquire a free-agent outfielder, with Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker being prime targets. If their efforts are unsuccessful, the team may be compelled to rely on Dominguez, or at least give him an opportunity to showcase his skills alongside up-and-coming outfield prospect Spencer Jones.
As the Yankees navigate these developments, fans remain hopeful that strategic decisions will lead to a more formidable team ready to compete in the coming season.
