The New York Yankees have completed a trade with the Miami Marlins to acquire left-handed pitcher Ryan Weathers. The Marlins officially announced the deal on Tuesday evening.

In exchange for Weathers, the Marlins will receive four minor league players: outfielders Dillon Lewis and Brendan Jones, as well as infielders Dillon Jason and Juan Matheus. Among these prospects, Jones is recognized as the Yankees’ No. 15 prospect, while Lewis is ranked No. 16 according to MLB.com. Conversely, Jason and Matheus were not listed among the top 30 prospects in the Yankees’ organization.

Weathers, who is 26 years old, was originally selected by the San Diego Padres as the seventh overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. Over five seasons in Major League Baseball, he has pitched for both the Marlins and the Padres, accumulating a total of 281 innings, during which he has recorded a 4.93 ERA and a 1.384 WHIP, along with 235 strikeouts and 99 walks.

Notably, Weathers has never exceeded 94 2/3 innings in a season, a milestone he reached during his debut year in 2021 with the Padres, where he made 18 starts. After playing parts of three seasons for San Diego, he was traded to the Marlins at the 2023 trade deadline. In his time with the Marlins, he maintained a 4.11 ERA, striking out 131 batters while walking 48 in 138 innings pitched. Unfortunately, his tenure with Miami was marred by injuries, including issues with his forearm and lat.

While the specifics of Weathers’ role with the Yankees are yet to be determined, he is seen as a potential candidate for the back end of the starting rotation, provided he can stay healthy. Additionally, it’s worth noting that Weathers comes from a lineage of baseball talent, as he is the son of David Weathers, who had a lengthy 19-year career in the MLB, including a stint with the Yankees in 1996 and 1997.

This acquisition marks an opportunity for Weathers to carve out a significant role within the Yankees organization, leveraging his experience and family legacy. The trade underscores the Yankees’ commitment to strengthening their pitching depth as they prepare for the next season.
