The New York Yankees faced disappointment last postseason with an elimination by the Toronto Blue Jays, prompting a need for strategic moves in free agency as they aim to return to the World Series. Among the potential free agents on the Yankees’ radar is Cody Bellinger, who could become a top priority as the team looks to bolster its lineup.
While Bellinger’s return would be beneficial, it may not address all of the Yankees’ needs, particularly in their infield. Ben Rice is poised to take over at first base, while Jazz Chisholm Jr. is expected to solidify the second base position. Although Anthony Volpe may experience some time away from the field, both general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone have emphasized that he remains their starting shortstop. Ryan McMahon, who was acquired near the trade deadline, will anchor third base, but his performance has left much to be desired.
The Yankees are in search of an offensive upgrade for the left side of the infield. McMahon’s output was underwhelming, leading to speculation that there may be better options available through free agency. Notably, Alex Bregman has opted out of his contract and could be a key target for the Yankees. Industry insider David Schoenfield from ESPN categorized the Yankees as a “longshot” to land Bregman, who is projected to secure a lucrative four-year deal worth $110 million this offseason.
Bregman, an All-Star for the first time since 2019, played a significant role in the Boston Red Sox’s postseason run, boasting a batting line of .273/.360/.462 over 114 games. Before succumbing to injury in May, he was enjoying an even more impressive season, hitting .299. His return to All-Star form indicates he could dramatically enhance the Yankees’ offensive capabilities.
However, the prospect of signing Bregman poses a logistical challenge. With McMahon already on the Yankees’ roster, New York would need to explore trade opportunities before potentially adding Bregman to their lineup.
As the Yankees prepare for the upcoming offseason, their decisions will be critical in shaping the future success of the franchise. The pressure is on to not only secure Bellinger but also to make shrewd moves that could reinforce their infield and set them on a path back to championship contention.
