The New York Yankees have announced the release of veteran pitcher Marcus Stroman, a move made on Friday. This decision comes as they also integrate several players acquired before the deadline, including Camilo Doval, David Bednar, Jake Bird, and Jose Caballero, into the active roster.
Stroman, now 34, was in the second year of a two-year, $37 million contract. His release means the Yankees will absorb the remaining $5.61 million as dead money, although they can reduce this amount by the prorated league minimum if he signs with another team.
This season, Stroman faced challenges, including a knee injury that kept him sidelined for nearly two months from mid-April to mid-June. Before his injury, he struggled with an ERA of 12 runs over 9.1 innings. After his return, however, he performed better, managing a 4.55 ERA over 29.2 innings, although his strikeout rate was concerningly low at 14.8%. Despite this, his command was solid, with a 7% walk rate and a ground ball rate of 48%.
His contract included a vesting option for $18 million for the 2026 season, but this was contingent on him pitching 140 innings in 2025—a target he is unlikely to meet given his current total of just 39 innings this season.
With Stroman’s departure, the Yankees are looking towards younger talent, such as flamethrowing prospect Cam Schlittler, who recently made his major league debut. The team’s rotation now comprises Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, Will Warren, and Schlittler, while the reigning AL Rookie of the Year, Luis Gil, is nearing a return from injury after a successful minor league rehab stint.
While Stroman’s performance has declined from his earlier peak years between 2014 and 2023, when he maintained a commendable ERA of 3.65, he still offers value. Given the limited options available for teams seeking pitching depth post-deadline, it is likely that he will find a new team soon.
