Yankees Make Wave with Bellinger Trade: What’s Next for Their Roster?

The New York Yankees made a significant move on Tuesday by trading for outfielder and first baseman Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs. This acquisition is part of the Yankees’ strategy to bolster their roster following the departure of outfielder Juan Soto to the New York Mets.

To finalize the deal, the Cubs also transferred cash considerations to the Yankees, who in exchange sent right-hander Cody Poteet to Chicago. Reports indicate that the Yankees will receive $5 million to help offset Bellinger’s salary, which stands at $27.5 million for the 2025 season, along with a player option for $25 million in 2026. Chicago is set to pay $2.5 million toward Bellinger’s current salary while the remaining amount will either go toward a possible contract buyout or contribute to his salary in 2026.

Bellinger, a 29-year-old player and the 2019 National League MVP, saw a resurgence in his performance during the 2023 season with the Cubs, batting .266 with 18 home runs and 78 RBIs. He had previously signed a three-year contract worth $80 million with Chicago earlier this year. His versatility is an asset for the Yankees, as he can play both center field and left field while also being an exceptional defensive first baseman.

The Yankees, coming off a World Series defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers, have been busy enhancing their roster. This includes the recent addition of left-handed starter Max Fried and the trade for All-Star closer Devin Williams. Bellinger’s signing appears to be a strategic fit for New York, allowing them to address gaps left by Soto while also providing a strong middle-of-the-lineup hitter.

The Cubs had been looking to offload Bellinger to lighten their payroll and improve their team, which finished the season with an 83-79 record. This careful negotiation resulted in the agreed-upon figure of $5 million accompanying Poteet, who had a successful stint with the Yankees earlier this season.

Additionally, the Cubs made another move on Tuesday, trading catcher Matt Thaiss to the Chicago White Sox for cash considerations.

In summary, the Yankees are positioning themselves for a stronger roster next season with a series of strategic acquisitions, aiming to convert their ambitious changes into competitive performances. The trade for Bellinger not only highlights the Yankees’ commitment to winning but also showcases Bellinger’s potential to reclaim his form as an elite player. This adds an element of excitement for fans looking forward to the upcoming season.
