Yankees Make History with Record-Breaking Pitcher Contract

Max Fried, a two-time All-Star left-handed pitcher, has reportedly signed an impressive eight-year, $218 million contract with the New York Yankees, marking the largest guarantee ever for a left-handed pitcher. This deal, pending a physical, not only consolidates Fried’s status as a top player but also sets a franchise record for the Yankees, now boasting 12 contracts worth over $100 million—more than any other team, surpassing the Los Angeles Dodgers.

At 30 years old, Fried has established himself as a leading pitcher in the National League during his seven seasons with the Atlanta Braves, where he recorded an outstanding 2.81 ERA over the last five years, ranking top among MLB starters. His expertise on the mound, characterized by pitch command and the ability to excel in long outings, made him a prime target for several competitive teams, including the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, and Texas Rangers, especially after the Yankees faced the departure of outfielder Juan Soto to the New York Mets.

Fried now joins an already impressive Yankees rotation featuring star pitchers like Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Marcus Stroman, enhancing their competitive edge moving forward. He breaks the previous record for a left-handed pitcher’s contract, surpassing contracts given to notable players such as David Price and Clayton Kershaw.

While Fried’s postseason performances have had their ups and downs, his remarkable six shutout innings during the Braves’ World Series victory in 2021 exemplify his potential in crucial games. Drafted seventh overall in 2012, Fried has successfully transitioned his pitching style, relying heavily on his curveball and slider alongside a strategic use of his fastball.

Moving into the next season, questions will surround his ability to consistently deliver high innings and performances; however, his track record suggests great promise. Notably, Fried recorded a commendable 3.25 ERA and led MLB with two complete games last year, affirming his role as a key player for the Yankees.

This signing symbolizes the Yankees’ commitment to securing high-caliber talent while also generating excitement for fans, providing hope for a strong season ahead as they build a formidable pitching lineup.
