Yankees Land All-Star Closer: A Game-Changing Trade?

The New York Yankees have made a significant addition to their bullpen by acquiring reliever Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers. The report, which comes from ESPN’s Jeff Passan, reveals that the Yankees traded pitcher Nestor Cortes, infield prospect Caleb Durbin, and some cash to the Brewers in exchange for Williams.

At 30 years old, Williams has established himself as a formidable closer, amassing 65 saves over the past three seasons with the Brewers. Last season, he recorded 14 saves in just 22 appearances, despite missing the first three months due to a stress fracture in his back. Upon his return, he showcased his talent by allowing only three earned runs in 21 2/3 innings during regular play.

Williams also took the hill during postseason play, where he faced the New York Mets. While he struggled in a clutch moment in Game 3, his overall performance in previous seasons underlines his capability as an elite pitcher. The Brewers opted not to exercise his $10.5 million option for the 2025 season, meaning he now enters his final year of arbitration, which adds an interesting layer to his current situation.

Over his six-year career entirely spent with the Brewers, Williams not only became a two-time National League All-Star but also claimed the 2020 NL Rookie of the Year title. He recorded a remarkable 68 saves and a stellar 1.83 ERA with a 1.02 WHIP during his tenure.

For the Yankees, the addition of Williams, alongside the anticipated return of Jonathan Loáisiga from Tommy John surgery, is expected to strengthen their bullpen significantly. It raises intriguing questions regarding the closer role for the upcoming season, particularly with Clay Holmes now signed with the New York Mets after losing his position to Luke Weaver.

Cortes, who has developed into a reliable starter for the Yankees, made 84 starts over the last four seasons. With the recent addition of Max Fried to the rotation, moving Cortes became a necessary decision.

The upcoming season holds promise for the Yankees, as they look to bolster their pitching staff with proven talents like Williams, who has demonstrated resilience and skill throughout his career. This strategic move could bring renewed hope for a successful season ahead for the Yankees and their fans.
