X Unveils New Chat With End-to-End Encryption – Metadata Remains Exposed

X has officially launched its highly anticipated chat platform, enhancing its direct messaging (DM) capabilities to align more closely with popular messaging applications. This new update introduces several advanced features, including voice and video calls, file sharing, and options to edit and delete messages after they have been sent. It also prioritizes user privacy with the implementation of end-to-end encryption and screenshot notifications.

The revamped messaging system, referred to as ‘Chat,’ is currently being rolled out on iOS and web platforms, with an Android version scheduled for release in the near future. Additionally, the company plans to introduce a voice memo feature that will allow users to send audio messages.

Over the past few months, X has been gradually teasing these chat features. Earlier this year, an initial version of the encrypted messaging was introduced but was temporarily halted in May due to unspecified issues. However, the updated encryption appears to have overcome those earlier limitations. According to X’s help center, group messages and multimedia content can now be encrypted, although the associated metadata—such as the recipient’s information—is not protected.

Despite these advancements, X has acknowledged some vulnerabilities in its encryption system, including the risk of man-in-the-middle attacks that could compromise the security of conversations. The company warns that users would not be notified if a malicious actor or even X itself were to intercept an encrypted chat due to a legal obligation. However, X assures that it is actively developing additional features to enhance users’ ability to verify the authenticity of their encrypted interactions.

This development marks a significant step for X as it aims to modernize its functionality and compete with other leading messaging platforms, highlighting its commitment to user privacy and advanced communication features.
