X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has largely recovered from a significant outage that rendered the app inaccessible for tens of thousands of users on Friday morning. As of 2 p.m. ET, connectivity issues had decreased, with around 1,000 users continuing to report problems. At its peak, Downdetector noted over 74,000 users in the United States experiencing issues by 10 a.m. ET, with more than half of those problems arising from the mobile app.
The outage was nationwide, impacting major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Houston. Users quickly took to Downdetector to report problems, prompting inquiries into the cause of the disruption.
This incident marks the second major outage for X within the week. On Tuesday, January 13, more than 24,000 users reported issues at approximately 9:20 a.m. ET, although these were resolved by 10 a.m. ET. The platform has faced challenges with internet infrastructure provider Cloudflare in recent months, with previous outages in November and December affecting multiple services, including X itself.
As the platform navigates these challenges, users remain hopeful for improved stability and performance in the future. USA TODAY has reached out to X for further clarification on the outages and their resolutions.
