West Virginia University (WVU) has officially parted ways with head football coach Neal Brown after the Mountaineers wrapped up a disappointing 6-6 season in the Big 12. Athletic director Wren Baker made the announcement, expressing well wishes for Brown and his family as they move on to new opportunities.
In his six seasons at the helm, Brown recorded a 37-35 overall record but struggled to elevate the team’s performance, failing to secure a spot in the AP Top 25 or contend for a Big 12 championship. The team faced significant challenges this season, notably losing nine consecutive games against ranked opponents and experiencing a dramatic drop in offensive productivity despite having key players like quarterback Garrett Greene and running backs Jahiem White and C.J. Donaldson. The defense also struggled, ranking poorly in national statistics for passing yards allowed.
Despite earlier assurances of support from Baker, the team’s performance declined throughout the season. Following a particularly disheartening 52-15 loss to Texas Tech, Brown acknowledged the team’s unsatisfactory record but noted the resilience shown by players in adversity. A surge of dissatisfaction from fans culminated in calls for his dismissal, accompanied by billboards around Morgantown urging Brown’s exit.
Brown found himself under increasing pressure after a string of home losses and a miserable road record. The situation worsened after a notable loss to rivals Pittsburgh, and following a disappointing performance against Kansas State, he made the decision to dismiss defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley. With more changes expected, Jeff Koonz stepped in as interim defensive coordinator, but the team’s issues persisted.
The Mountaineers have not won a conference title since 2011, marking a significant dry spell since their successful run in the Big East prior to joining the Big 12 in 2012. Brown’s exit opens up the possibility for a fresh start for the program, which fans are hopeful will lead to improved performance and a return to competitiveness in the coming seasons. With the upcoming bowl game on the horizon, the next steps for the coaching staff and team remain uncertain.
The challenge ahead could be a turning point for WVU, as they seek to rebuild and recapture the spirit of success from their earlier years.
