Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu highlighted the significant impact of digital technologies on daily life during the World Safer Internet Day event in Nadi. He pointed out the internet’s dual nature, noting that while it enhances connectivity, it can also promote division, particularly on social media platforms where the misuse of artificial intelligence further complicates issues.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Smart Tech, Safe Choices — Exploring the Safe and Responsible Use of AI,” Tudravu urged attendees to engage in ongoing discussions about digital safety rather than limiting the conversation to immediate concerns. With artificial intelligence being one of the fastest adopted technologies in history, he stressed the necessity for communities to enhance their digital awareness to effectively navigate the risks it presents.
He expressed concern over the rise of online abuse, highlighting the role of “keyboard warriors” who exploit anonymity to spread hatred and dissent. This troubling trend is worsened by AI capabilities, creating a challenging landscape for online interactions. Tudravu also noted an increase in computer-related offenses, particularly intimate image abuse and unauthorized access to accounts, revealing that nearly 60% of cybercrimes involve these violations.
Looking to the future, Commissioner Tudravu envisioned 2026 as a pivotal year for “uniformity” in policing efforts, advocating for collaboration among various stakeholders. He emphasized the importance of cohesive strategies to address the challenges brought on by digital technologies and stressed the need for instilling digital literacy in young people to better prepare future generations.
In a proactive initiative, he pointed to Fiji’s National Digital Strategy 2025-2030, designed to foster digital transformation across the nation. By effectively harnessing digital technologies, the government aims to enhance the quality of life for all Fijians. However, Tudravu underscored the pivotal role law enforcement must play in sharing information and strategies to bolster cyber resilience.
His remarks project a hopeful perspective amid the challenges of digital advancements, advocating for unified efforts to improve online safety and security. This call for collaboration reflects a shared commitment to creating a safer digital environment for all Fijians, promoting a future where digital technologies contribute positively to society.
