This week, Worcester, Massachusetts will embrace its cinematic flair as the city hosts filming for “The Walking Dead: Dead City,” a sequel to the beloved original “Walking Dead” series. Production will take place in downtown Worcester on Wednesday and Thursday, prompting road closures to accommodate the filming schedule.
Starting from 6 a.m. until noon on both days, Franklin Street—stretching from Portland Street to Main Street—and Federal Street will be completely closed to traffic. Additionally, Mechanic Street will see closures on Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
“Dead City” is no stranger to the Bay State, having previously filmed there. Last year, production sought tall, thin extras to portray zombies in Boston; more recently, downtown Worcester was transformed into a make-believe New York City, featuring subway stops and trademark yellow taxis for a week-long shoot.
The original “Walking Dead” series, which achieved cult status, aired for 11 seasons and 177 episodes on AMC from 2010 to 2022. The sequel will follow popular characters Maggie and Negan, played by Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, as they navigate post-apocalyptic challenges in Manhattan.
Worcester’s spotlight in the film industry coincides with another production in the area—the Mark Wahlberg film titled “Weekend Warriors,” being made for Apple Studios. Wahlberg, a native of Dorchester, has been spotted filming scenes for this basketball-themed movie in locations like Lynn and Shrewsbury.
For those intrigued by the film industry, the Massachusetts Film Office has provided opportunities for local talent to get involved. Interested individuals can email the “Dead City” production team or inquire about crew positions for the Wahlberg film.
This filming event not only highlights Worcester’s growing role as a backdrop for major productions but also brings excitement to the local community, encouraging engagement with the arts and entertainment industry.
