ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Michigan Wolverines kicked off their season with a convincing 30-10 victory over the Fresno State Bulldogs, showcasing a dominant defensive performance that extended their regular-season winning streak to 16 games.
Before the game, much attention was given to the starting quarterback situation, but it soon became clear that the focus should have been on how Fresno State would tackle Michigan’s formidable defense. The Bulldogs managed to muster only 247 total yards, primarily through the air, accumulating 238 yards passing and just nine rushing yards. Key defensive contributions came from Josaiah Stewart, who recorded two sacks, along with Makari Paige, Rayshaun Benny, and Mason Graham, all of whom shone on the field.
A critical moment came late in the game when Michigan cornerback Will Johnson intercepted a pass and returned it 86 yards for a touchdown, solidifying the Wolverines’ lead.
Michigan opened the game’s scoring when defensive back Zeke Berry made an interception, allowing the offense to capitalize quickly. Quarterback Alex Orji executed a goalline play, connecting with running back Donovan Edwards for the game’s first touchdown.
Later in the fourth quarter, a methodical drive led by new starting quarterback Davis Warren resulted in another touchdown, this time from tight end Colston Loveland, extending the Wolverines’ lead to 23-10. Loveland had an impressive 8 receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown.
The offense struggled in the first half, with fans voicing their displeasure as Warren completed only 18 of 25 passes for 118 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The Wolverines ended the first half with a mere 89 yards of offense, marking their lowest first-half total since 2016.
However, the story of the game was not just about the team’s performance but also about Warren’s inspiring journey. A cancer survivor who battled acute myeloid leukemia, Warren’s ascent to starting quarterback is a testament to his resilience and determination. After being offered a walk-on position by former head coach Jim Harbaugh, Warren has steadily progressed, eventually earning a scholarship in 2023.
With the Texas Longhorns visiting in the second week, Michigan will need to improve upon their performance as they look to maintain momentum in their quest for another successful season. This game marked the first-ever match-up between these two teams, but Michigan improved its all-time season-opening record to 119-23-3, including 101-15-2 at home. They also maintain a strong record against the Mountain West Conference.
