The Michigan football team started its season in an ideal manner during their game against Fresno State on Saturday night. The action kicked off with linebacker Jaishawn Barham stopping a run on the first play, followed by a solid hit from safety Makari Paige. The highlight came when new starting nickel back Zeke Berry intercepted a pass, returning it to the Fresno State 31, setting the stage for a strong start.
Quarterback Davis Warren quickly made his mark by connecting with tight end Colston Loveland for a first down. Following a Semaj Morgan end-around, Michigan faced a first-and-goal at the 3-yard line. Alex Orji, who had lost the quarterback competition to Warren, entered the field for a surprising play-action pass that landed in the hands of Donovan Edwards for the game’s first touchdown. This play helped the No. 8 Wolverines secure a 30-10 win over the Bulldogs.
However, the initial momentum faded as Michigan struggled offensively for much of the game. They secured just one first down on their next four possessions, and by the second quarter, were outgained in total yards 88-42, despite leading on the scoreboard. The Bulldogs made a strong push with a 75-yard touchdown drive that brought them within one possession, but Michigan responded with a scoring drive of their own to regain control.
Throughout the night, Michigan’s defense maintained its reputation as a formidable unit, forcing turnovers, recording tackles for loss, and pressuring the quarterback effectively. Special teams also performed adequately under head coach Sherrone Moore’s debut.
Looking ahead, Michigan will face an even tougher challenge next week against No. 4 Texas, which dominated Colorado State in its opener.
Despite initial offensive difficulties, Loveland stood out with impressive stats, amassing eight catches for 87 yards and a touchdown. The defense also showcased its strength, with Berry and other young players making significant contributions.
As the Wolverines prepare for their upcoming match, the message from players like Kalel Mullings remains clear: the team is focused on improving each week and building off their early-season experiences.
