Wolverines Rally for Nail-Biting NCAA Softball Victory!

The University of Michigan’s softball team secured a thrilling 4-3 victory against UCF in its NCAA Regional opener on Friday at Texas’ Red and Charline McCombs Field. A decisive three-run sixth inning, led by a pivotal two-run homer from freshman Lauren Putz, powered the Wolverines to their win.

Michigan (39-19) will advance to face the sixth-seeded host Texas in the winner’s bracket game on Saturday, May 17, at noon CT, with the game broadcasting live on ESPN.

The Wolverines showcased their power at the plate, with both Putz and sophomore right fielder Ella Stephenson hitting home runs. Stephenson started the scoring with a solo shot in the second inning, tying the game. Putz followed up with her go-ahead homer in the sixth, bringing her season total to 14 home runs.

The team’s pitching was also a standout feature. Senior Lauren Derkowski, who initially took the mound, returned in the crucial moments of the seventh inning to seal the victory with a three-pitch strikeout, securing her sixth save of the season. Derkowski allowed three runs on six hits while striking out four over 4.1 innings. Sophomore Erin Hoehn earned the win, contributing 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

UCF took an early lead in the first inning, scoring thanks to some strategic base running and a sacrifice fly. After a brief exchange of leads, Michigan’s six-hit offensive effort enabled them to reclaim control with a well-timed rally in the sixth.

In a crucial defensive play, junior shortstop Avery Fantucci executed a double play to end UCF’s threatening seventh inning, showcasing the Wolverines’ strong teamwork and decision-making under pressure.

With this victory, Michigan displayed resilience and determination, setting the stage for their next challenge against Texas. The Wolverines’ ability to respond to adversity bodes well as they look to continue their tournament run.
