Michigan showcased a strong performance from its running backs in a home victory against Arkansas State, winning 28-18. Kalel Mullings led the Wolverines with a career-high 153 rushing yards and two touchdowns, compensating for quarterback Davis Warren’s struggles, which included three interceptions.
Ranked 17th, the Wolverines (2-1) faced challenges despite their win, as they were expected to dominate against the Sun Belt Conference team and failed to do so largely due to Warren’s turnovers. Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore commented on the need for change, stating, “Put the ball in harm’s way too many times.”
Warren completed 11 of 14 passes for 122 yards, mainly focusing on short throws, which resulted in little offensive momentum. In the fourth quarter, Alex Orji took over the quarterback role and connected with Hogan Hansen for a 9-yard touchdown pass, extending Michigan’s lead to 28-3.
Michigan’s rushing attack proved effective after struggling to score on the ground in the previous two games, including a loss to then-No. 3 Texas. “They controlled the football,” said Arkansas State coach Butch Jones, reflecting on his team’s difficulty in stopping the Wolverines.
Despite the loss, Arkansas State (2-1) made late attempts to close the gap, scoring two touchdowns in the final minutes after missing several earlier scoring opportunities. The Red Wolves remained competitive but failed to convert several key plays. Notably, quarterback Jaylen Raynor finished with 140 yards passing and an interception before being replaced by Timmy McClain, who threw a touchdown late in the game.
In injury news, Michigan’s all-American tight end Colston Loveland left the game with an unspecified injury in the third quarter. Coach Moore had no immediate update on his status.
Looking ahead, Michigan will enter its Big Ten opener against No. 11 Southern California, while Arkansas State prepares to face another ranked opponent, No. 21 Iowa State. The Wolverines may see a drop in their ranking following this lackluster outing, having started the season in the top 10 before slipping after recent performances.
