Wolverines’ Championship Hopes Dim After Upset in Seattle

Michigan football faced a setback in its national championship rematch against Washington on Saturday, suffering a 27-17 defeat.

The Wolverines initially overcame an early 14-point deficit, taking a 17-14 lead in the second half. However, they were unable to secure additional points and allowed Washington to score twice in the final quarter. This marked Michigan’s first conference loss of the season, dropping their record to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten. Washington, also at 4-2 and 2-1 in the Big Ten, sought to avenge their 34-13 loss to Michigan in the 2023 national championship game.

Washington set the tone early, going up 14-0 with touchdowns from Denzel Boston and Giles Jackson. Michigan responded by replacing quarterback Alex Orji with seasoned veteran Jack Tuttle, which led to a touchdown drive capped by a long run from Donovan Edwards. The Wolverines closed the half with a 45-yard field goal by Dominic Zvada and successfully blocked a Washington field goal attempt.

In the second half, Michigan mounted an impressive drive resulting in a touchdown by tight end Colston Loveland, giving them a brief lead. Washington responded with a field goal to tie the game at 17. The pivotal moment came when Tuttle fumbled in Michigan territory, allowing Jonah Coleman to score and give Washington the decisive 24-17 lead.

Despite having their first road game of the season in Seattle, Michigan struggled to find their rhythm. This defeat adds to their losses against both Texas and Washington, teams also in contention for the College Football Playoff.

In key moments during the game, Washington’s defense stepped up, including an interception by Kamren Fabiculanan that shifted momentum and set up another Washington touchdown. The Wolverines will look to regroup as they move forward in the season.
